For the past few years my summer vacation with my family has consisted of driving from Florida to go and visit family in New York and New Jersey; maybe throwing in a few day stops here and there. I never really thought of it as a true vacation, as it was just visiting mine and my husband’s home town. Sure, we had fun while there; eating food we can’t get in Florida, seeing local sites and spending time with people we don’t see often. It still never really felt like a vacation.
This summer, actually in about 10 days, I will be experiencing my first family vacation to an actual vacation destination that is not where I grew up. This year we are venturing with my family to parts of the country I know nothing about. We will be setting off on a weeklong adventure through Jackson Hole, WY and Yellowstone National Park.
I have never been to this part of the country. I have no idea what to expect. I also have no idea what to pack, but that is a completely different article. I am vacationing to the unknown. I only have a small booklet that tells me a brief description of what my family and I will be doing for these 7 days. The rest will be announced once we arrive.
I am a big time planner and I like to know as much information about places as I can gather. Yes, I have searched the internet, Googled every place we will be visiting, looked at pictures and asked friends about their experiences when they visited the area. There is still much that is unknown to me and I consider that part of this adventure.
Trying to get out of the norm and go out and do something out of the ordinary is very difficult for some people, myself included. Like others, I enjoy my routine and my comfort zone. With this vacation quickly approaching, I have decided I am making this the summer that I come out of my comfort zone. There is so much out there to experience and discover, I no longer want to sit back and just experience it through television shows and articles online. I’m not going to go all out and start doing all these wild and crazy things all at once. I’ll take it a step at a time; more like baby steps. During this vacation, I will be experiencing white water rafting for the first time ever and yes it freaks me out ( I prefer calm waters and the ability to see the bottom) but I am excited to try something new.
Summer is the perfect time to travel a bit and experience the world around you. Whether it’s a day trip, weekend getaway, or a three week excursion memories are created that can be revisited anytime you wish. My hope is to fill up not only my scrapbook with my summer shenanigans but to fill mine and my family’s hearts with wonderful memories that will be shared for years to come. I may be vacationing into the unknown, but I am so excited to begin the adventure.
