“We love because it’s the only true adventure.”
Though I consider myself to be a very loving person, I have to say with all honesty that at times the path to active loving is the last thing I want to think about when everything in me wants to feel resentful, self-righteous and judgmental. When life throws the sink in my direction, it is hard not to react with unforgiveness from the experience of feeling hurt and disappointment. But we have to remember as much effort as it takes to stay in hurt feelings, it takes more effort to practice gentleness and patience with ourselves.
Love as a practice means that I show up for the people who have meaning in my life, but also to show up for myself when it’s the hardest thing to do. In effect, I am saying that I am in relationship to a Universe that is intrinsically open and giving. This is not an easy practice. So just for this moment, I will choose love and however that manifests will hopefully bring a sense of peace to my day.
Loving when it’s hard will often reveal the courage it takes to accept the thoughts and feelings we would rather not feel. In every wisdom tradition, the notion of love is always present. They never said the path would be an easy one. It has not been easy for me, but it is what drives me, nourishes my spirit and keeps me humble.
We cannot give to others what we are reluctant to give to ourselves. Love in action is not selfish, but self-affirming. And from that well of inner strength, we can give with an open heart and hopefully attract the same.
